Wondering how to make clear ice?

Someone has to ask the question: Does clear ice really matter?

I came across an article on punchdrink.com that asks the question so many of us started with: Does clear ice really matter? Well of course it does. :)
“It’s a huge aesthetic difference that can’t be discounted,” argues [Camper] English. “Styrofoam cup versus crystal glassware. It makes for a completely different experience.”

Not everyone agrees. Tom Macy, the head bartender and a partner at Clover Club, the vaunted Brooklyn cocktail den, understands the glassware analogy. But it hasn’t led him to the same conclusion. “I love beautiful glassware,” says Macy. “And I love beautiful bar tools. But it doesn’t necessarily make the drink taste better. If you close your eyes and blind taste it, I defy anyone to tell me which drink has clear ice.”

The article features quotes from a few makers in the directory:

The blind taste argument means so little. If you kept your eyes closed, would you even know who you were getting intimate with? Could you really tell whether it was Madonna or Guy Ritchie? Or Mel B or Howard Stern? Call it a poor analogy, but my point is that enjoying a great cocktail is about so much more than just the mere taste of it. Clear ice for the win it is. Sent with love for great cocktails, and they come with clear ice.

Yeah I totally agree (as you might imagine!). Part of clear ice is the rate of dilution slowing so that you can enjoy the drink longer... but the massive part of it is the visual appeal. After years with clear ice, it still never gets old to prepare a nice emerald gem, pour a spirit over it, and just marvel at it.
